Room 2 commonwealth games
For the last two weeks Room 2 have been working on Commonwealth Games stories. We wrote stories about all kinds of sports like swimming, diving, sprinting, hockey, cycling, shotput, weightlifting and javelin. Liam's story was about rugby. He was in the All Blacks, Shay's story was about diving. Crytal's story was about gymnastics, Kane's story was about weightlifting and Kaci's was about shotput.
Here is the best bit from Rory's story: "The queen said ALL BLACKS WIN ALL BLACKS WIN and her crown fell right off because she was excited."
Here is the best bit from Elisha's story "When It my turn I did a double twist flip on the 10m bar and I won a gold medal."
By Elisha and Rory.

J and J
Our amazing assembly award winners this week are Jazz and Jasmine! Jazz has passed ALL of her basic facts levels, the only person ever to do this so quickly, genius!
Jasmine got her award from Miss Pauley for the fantastic way she follows instructions and is always so happy and helpful. Well done ladies.
How to freak out your mother!
Shay, Kane and Cameron read a story called "How to freak your mother out with a dinosaur". It was an unusual story because it was made into a flow chart. You had to read the boxes in the chart and make decisions by following the arrows. The boys made a flow chart themselves in publisher by using the story as a model. Here is Shay's amazing work!

Lift your Lip!
Today we had a visit from Sam and Tina our wonderful dental therapists. It is a special oral health week at NEVNS so they came to talk to us about caring for our teeth. We learnt we should brush our teeth twice a day and that we should not rinse out the toothpaste as it has flouride in it and leaving a little on the outside of our teeth will help to protect them. We also learnt about caring for our teeth by eating a healthy diet and drinking plenty of water. Here we are with our treats for our teeth from Sam and Tina, new toothbrushes and toothpaste. Ka rawe!

Garden Guru's
It's spring! Time to plant our garden. Yesterday Miss B and her garden guru friends went out to work in the garden while there was a spot of fine weather. They cleared the weeds, dug over the garden and planted new things. We now have strawberries, spinach, silverbeet, beans, lettuce, broccoli, spring onions, carrots and beetroot planted. We hope they all grow big, strong and healthy so we can have tasty things to eat next term.

Kapa haka
On Thursday the senior school went to the Poly fest. When we got there we had to put our bags beside the wall and we put our shoes and socks there as well. Then we moved up to the front of the court. When it was our turn the girls had to line up first then the boys. When we finished we went home.

Cupcake Day for the SPCA
Wow look at all the amazing cupcakes we created to raise money for our local SPCA. We had a fantastic, fun morning with our helpers Jesseme and Ashleigh creating tasty treats to sell at lunchtime. We have been talking about the work the SPCA does for animals who haven't found loving homes and the sorts of things the money we raise could help to pay for. Our SPCA really needs the money to keep helping awesome pets to find new homes, just like Miss B's dog Murphy. We are so glad we could help them out with the $90 we raised by selling our cupcakes. Top effort Room 2!
Murphy says thanks for helping my friends out!

Trying new things
We have been reading and writing lots of fantastic poetry about food. We tried a new food, dried cranberries. Some people loved them, some didn't but everyone agreed they were strange and wrinkly! We used our five senses to think of describing words for the cranberries and then we used them to write our poems. We also used similes in our work, can you spot them?
Dried Cranberry
It looks slimy and wrinkly.
It feels oily and bumpy.
It smells sweet and sour.
It looks wrinkly like old people.

Finding out about photography
We are learning about photography for art. We are learning about how to take good photographs. We have talked about how to use objects to frame our pictures. We had a look around our school and classroom for things that would make good frames and then tried out some of our ideas with a buddy. We looked at all our pictures and talked about which ones were most effective and why. You can see some for yourself here, which ones do you think are best?

Cool computing Cameron
Cameron is the assembly award winner for being such a whizz kid on the computer. He was able to make his sound book on photostory in super quick time, including the tricky bits like adding music and talking. Cameron was also a great ICT leader, helping other children to know where to go next with their photo stories. Well done Cameron

Marshmallow Sammies
Look at the amazing learning we have been doing about writing instructions.
Try making them yourself using Lucy's instructions.
1 You need a plate.
2 You need a packet of biscuits and marshmallows.
3 A microwave oven to cook them in.
4 Put the biscuits in the microwave.
5 Get a marshmalow and put it on one biscuit and put another biscuit on the top.
6 Now cook for 20 seconds.
7 When you take it out let it cool off for 25 seconds.
8 Now stuff your face!
Let us know how well these instructions work!

Sounds Amazing
We have been learning about sound and how it travels in science. We have had a lot of fun experimenting with making sound, working out how it is made and how it travels to our ears. We have also found about the inner ear and how it works. We are now working out ways to share our knowledge with the junior school so we can help them to learn about sound too. We are planning presentations using photostory which we hope to also share on our blog and wiki. Look at these great pictures of us experimenting with string telephones.
