Art, artists and portraits

We have been learning about drawing portraits and the different ways artists do portraits. We have learnt that if you draw a picture of yourself it is called a self-portrait. We looked at the book "Willy's Pictures" By Anthony Browne and found an artist called Frida Kahlo who painted 55 self-portraits. She had a tough time throughout her life because she got badly hurt in an accident so she often painted herself in ways that showed this. We also talked about the famous Mona Lisa and wondered is she smiling and if she is what is she smiling about? Take a look at this website for kids about some famous artists for more information.

Hi Room 2!
You should do a Jackson Pollock collaborative painting!

That sounds like an amazing idea Mel! The children would have to come to school in their very old clothes though it could get seriously messy :)
