Have a go at the Edgar Centre
What an amazing morning the Year 3/4 children had at the Have a go day at the Edgar Centre today. We got to "have a go" at league, gymnastics, t-ball, golf, gymnastics and cricket. It was so much fun! Special thanks to our wonderful parent helpers Nick, Matt, Adam, Janice and Paula for helping out our children :)

Aquarium Visit
We had an amazing visit to Macandrew Bay and the Portobello Aquarium last week with our friends in Room 3 and 5. We were surprised to find two dead octopus on the beach at Macandrew Bay. We learnt that after they mate octopus die that is probably why we found them washed up on the beach. Thanks to Warren for spreading the octopus out so we could have a really good look at all the parts up close.
Surprise!
Last week Room 2 got a big surprise in the mail. We were sitting down to read a story when Liam came in with a big box from the office, we didn't think it was for us and then he said there were two more in the office as well! We got quite excited. Miss B gave us clues and we tried to guess what was in the box, but we just couldn't. We opened the boxes and were amazed to find teddy bears in bee suits and books with pencil cases on them, enough for every one in the class! Last term we had written to the company who make Marbig pencils because we had got a bad batch of pencils that kept breaking and getting chewed up by our sharpeners. We wrote to them and told them all about our problem so to say thankyou and sorry they sent us presents. We were so happy they took our problem seriously and glad we were brave enough to let them know what we thought.

Snow, snow and more snow!
Can you believe how much snow we have had? I have lived in Dunedin for quite a long time and don't ever remember the schools being closed for two days in a row. I hope everyone had fun playing in the snow, did anyone make a really cool snowman? A friend of mine made one and dyed it green with food colouring it looked really funny.

Cycle Safety
Welcome back!!
Yes it seems like a hundred years since room 2 last posted on the blog, but unfortunatley Miss B's computer had a nasty accident and all the lovely photos and things were trapped on it and we couldn't blog them. Over the next wee while we hope to catch up on the cool stuff we have been up to starting with this .......
We have been buddy reading with our friends in room 10 on a Friday afternoon, what a wonderful way to end the week. The children are working so beautifully together it makes Mrs S and I so proud!

Art, artists and portraits
We have been learning about drawing portraits and the different ways artists do portraits. We have learnt that if you draw a picture of yourself it is called a self-portrait. We looked at the book "Willy's Pictures" By Anthony Browne and found an artist called Frida Kahlo who painted 55 self-portraits. She had a tough time throughout her life because she got badly hurt in an accident so she often painted herself in ways that showed this. We also talked about the famous Mona Lisa and wondered is she smiling and if she is what is she smiling about? Take a look at this website for kids about some famous artists for more information.

Captain Underpants
Room 2 love Captain Underpants. We have just finished reading the very first Captain Underpants novel and it was hilarious. It is about two boys called George and Harold who are quite naughty and like to get into trouble at school, and make comic books about a superhero called Captain Underpants. They get in big trouble with the principal of their school so they decide to try and hypnotise him to get out of trouble but it all goes wrong! We are just starting on the second book called The Attack of the Talking Toilets, we just can't wait to read it everyday.
I have put a link to the website for the author, Dav Pilkey, in the links box on the right hand side of this page, check it out!

Exploring
Our big area of learning for this term is called "Me in My Environment" so today we explored our school environment. We realised that our school is very big and has a lot of buildings but also a lot of trees, bush and grass. We walked all the way up to the very top field, up "heart attack hill" to look at some areas of our school some of us had never seen before because we don't use them very much. Next we came back to room 2 and wrote down all the things we had seen on post it notes to help us with our next task. Next we used our ideas to work with a buddy to draw big maps of our school environment. They are starting to look amazing and have so many interesting features. When they are finished we will hang them up in our classroom to help us with the next part of our learning. Hopefully we will put some of them on the blog too.
Did you know ........
That as well as interesting news and amazing work, our blog has a page with our homework sheet on it just in case you lose yours! It also links to other blogs in our school so you can see what all the children at NEVNS are up to. Just scroll down to the part that shows the list of blogs on the right hand side. Our blog is a very handy thing!
