Golf
Today room 2 had golf lessons with marvellous Melanie from Kiwi Golf. She taught us about the parts of a club, how to hold it correctly and how to swing the club so the ball goes a long way. We practiced by hitting balls of all different sizes. Next Melanie taught us how to chip a ball, that is hitting it so it only goes a short distance. We learnt that this is the shot you play to get your ball on the green. Golf was great!

Synchronised Swimming
On Saturday night Miss B was lucky enough to go to the Aqua Gold Synchronised Swimming Club's christmas show, How the Grinch Stole Christmas. She went to watch two of our very talented North East Valley Normal School students, Rika and Sierra, perform. The show was just amazing and the girls were brilliant. What a lot of hard work they have put in to their synchronised swimming.

Cameron's Incredible Homework
For homework this week the children had a range of activities to choose from to do with swimming. One of these activities was to design their dream swimming pool. Take a look at the amazing swimming pool Cameron has made, it has a fence, diving board, beach balls, people relaxing on lilos, and lots of little people swimming. Cameron's work is just amazing and the children were all very excited to see it, especially since it is edible! Well done Cameron, excellent creative thinking.

Armistice Day
Today the whole school went out to the flagpole to mark Armistice Day. Armistice Day is the day the day that we remember the end of the first world war at eleven minutes past eleven. We had a minutes silence and then sang the national anthem. Miss Clarke talked to us about how they celebrate this occasion in Canada too, and then we compared the different ways the days are celebrated in different countries.
Miss Clarke is back!

Celebrating the Pacific
On Friday Room 2, and a fabulous group of parent helpers, went to the museum to learn about different celebrations across the Pacific. We all wore a lavalava and a Fijian ai, which is a floral headband, that we made with Kiri at the museum. We participated in a kava ceremony, everybody had a job to do, N'Keyah even got to be a princess. The fire walking was great fun, and it looked quite realistic as you can see from our photos.

North Zone Sports
Yesterday Stella, Tarryn and Meihana went to the Caledonian Ground to compete in sprints and relays. The big girls made it into the finals for the relay. It was really hard to compete because it was hot and most of the children were much older. They did a great job racing against big kids in the 800m.

Amaryllis
Yesterday Dylan, from room 10, and his Mum and Dad came to visit Miss B after school. They asked if she would like an amaryllis to have in the classroom. Miss B was so excited because she had seen one in room 10 and thought it was beautiful. We had a lot of questions about our amaryllis, so we did some investigating and found out that they are a kind of lilly. We are waiting for our amaryllis to flower and thinking of ways to describe what it looks like. We made a wordle out of our descriptive language.

Busy Bees
Last Monday Anna's Grandad came to our classroom to talk about bees.
First he showed us the queen bee inside the glass frame then he told us to pass around the honey comb where the bees lay their eggs. Then we got to look at the bee larvae in some photographs, when the first queen bee grub hatches it goes and kills all the other queen bee grubs so she is the queen of the hive. He gave us some fresh honey and we had a delicious, nutritious honey sandwich.

Keeping Ourselves Safe
This week we have been working with Constable Somerfield on strategies for keeping ourselves safe in different situations. Today we talked about the parts of our body and learnt that no one touches our bodies without our permission. This made us also think about the way we treat other people.

Goal Setting
We have set some goals for ourselves for running to get ready for the school cross country.
Alyssa said "My goal is to run faster".
Aini said " My goal is to run the whole way".
Patrick said "My goal is to try to pass people quicker when I run the cross country".
Lydia said "My goal is to be faster than Meihana."
Austin said "My goal is to not run so fast at the start so I don't get too puffed".
TJ said "My goal is to run for a longer distance".
We have talked about ways we can achieve these goals and we will be keeping track of our progress

Maths with Miss Clarke
We have been learning about measuring in maths with Miss Clarke. We had to work cooperatively to make our identical twins from crepe paper and balloons. We measured from our neck to our hips, our arms and our legs with crepe paper. Then we measured parts of our bodies with things around the classroom. We had to remember to always measure from the start to the finish. It was quite exciting when the balloons started popping!

Harold
Today we had a fantastic visit to the life education bus to see our friends Jacki and Harold. We went on a fascinating train journey around the cirulatory system and learnt all sorts of things about how our heart works. We put some of our ideas into a wordle. We can't wait until our second visit on Monday!

Making books on the internet
Today at reading time Connor, Austin, Haziq and Amiru used the information they had learnt about worms, leeches and slugs to create their own fact book using bookr. It was a wee bit tricky beause the pages kept flipping if you got too close to the edge, but it was good fun!

Music with Anna
On Friday Anna came to visit room 2. We listened to two malaysian songs that we are going to sing in our puppet show. One of the songs is about a nana with only two teeth and a cockatoo. We have to perform the songs with our puppets.

Chuck the Chicken
Today we learnt to play a new game with Miss Clarke, called Chuck the Chicken at school, because we are learning to play games where we have to cooperate.
How to play Chuck the Chicken
You will need:
A toy chicken
Two teams
A netball court
1 First make sure you have even teams.
2 One team is throwing the chicken and the other team is chasing it.
3 The throwing team yells "Chuck the chicken" then they chuck the chicken.
4 When they have thrown the chicken they get into a circle and one of their team runs around the circle. They get a point for each time the person gets around the circle.
5 Meanwhile the other team picks up the chicken then their team lines up and they pass the chicken over and under all the people in their team. When they are finished they yell "Chuck the chicken" and they throw the chicken.
6 The game finishes when the teacher says and the team with the most points wins.

Scott Kvick - Super skiker
Today we were very lucky to meet Scott Kvick who plays ice hockey for the Dunedin Thunder. The children had heard about Scott and his skikes in the Otago Daily Times and Mrs Will arranged for him to visit us. Scott is planning on using his skikes, which are kind of a cross between skis and skates, to skike from Cape Reinga to Bluff to raise money for Canteen and the SPCA. We loved meeting Scott and hearing about his very interesting challenge. Good Luck Scott!
